What is a Byki list?
A Byki list is a collection of learnable information, usually a set of words or phrases in a foreign language, expressed on flash cards. Byki lists may include sound or images for each card and may be viewed on Byki.com, or downloaded for use in free or Deluxe versions of the Byki software for PCs and Macs. New Feature! Lists can also be downloaded onto an iPhone or iPhone Touch with Byki for iPhone Apps.

A tag is a keyword or category grouping that describes a Byki list and can be used to find lists that have something in common. You can assign multiple tags to each list.

Byki uses an intelligent method to present information in the best possible order to help you learn. You will see items you have trouble with more often than those you master quickly. When you get a card wrong, you will see it again immediately.

Why can't I see card text in some languages?
Some languages require certain fonts be installed to display characters. If you cannot see the characters in a list, you may download and install it with Byki on your desktop to set the font for your system. Or, you may install the fonts yourself in your control panel. Once the font is installed, lists in that language should display properly on Byki.com.

Just type the base letter and then press Ctrl-UpArrow. Keep pressing Ctrl-UpArrow until the accent you want has appeared. For more help, press the question mark button on Byki.

If a list has sound for each card, it will play automatically whenever the foreign word or phrase is displayed. You may also play the sound for any card by pressing the play sound button on the bottom left. Slow sound may be used by pressing the turtle button.

How do I increase my score?
Each correct answer increases your score, while each incorrect answer reduces it. The size of score movements will depend upon your previous progress in all of the learning modes. You will see the score for each card displayed on the card itself and in the View List tab. The scoring area to the right of the card will track your progress and display how many cards you have raised to each scoring level.

Unfortunately, your scores for a certain list are not maintained between sessions. This is one of many great reasons to purchase Byki Deluxe. With Byki Deluxe, you may download any list in Byki List Central, use it as often as you like, and track and save your scores for all your lists.

1 aggro Originally from the term, Aggro-Aussie, because Australian surfers were known to be some of the most aggressive. To be extremely aggressive and outgoing in the water.
2 backside 1. Surfing with your back to the wave. 2. A goofy foot going right, or a regular foot going left.
3 big gun 9-foot or longer surfboard especially designed for large waves
4 booga bumbye later on, in awhile
5 bump a swell in the water
6 climbing To carve an S-shaped path on a wave.
7 DA the
8 double up When two waves combine.
9 excellent great, fantastic, exceptional
10 frequency downshifting The increase of wave period within a fetch. A decrease in frequency is an increase in period. (You can look it up in your spare time.)
11 green flash The green color that sometimes occurs for a moment as the sun disappears over the ocean during sunsets on clear days.
12 head dip To touch the water with your head while surfing.
13 jag To retreat after getting worked.
14 left 1. a wave breaking to the left from the vantage of a surfer riding in 2. a wave breaking towards the right from the vantage point of the shore.
15 merv (short for Mervin) a merv is just your typical run of the mill idiot
16 nose the bow or front end of a surfboard
17 period time between waves
18 pucker factor the effect an intimidating wave has on your ability to remain relaxed
19 rip 1. To surf to the height of one's abilities. 2. To shred, lacerate and dominate.
20 shaper person who finishes the making of a surfboard starting with a foam surfboard blank
21 sine waves In deep water, swells are very well approximated by pure sine waves.
22 spray water being blown off the face of a wave; the ‘plume’; the release of water from a surfboard as it moves along (especially strong after quick turns)
23 swell a good thing
24 thruster three-finned or tri-finned surfboard
25 walking the board To walk back and forth on the surfboard to maintain control.
